Colic usually shows itself as the baby crying excessively in the evening whilst
kicking its legs as if in pain. Their tummy also feel rigid at the same time.
The crying may be temporarily relieved by holding or feeding the baby but it
may not stop until the colicky pain passes or the baby falls asleep exhausted.
Colic starts within the first month of life and usually recurs every night
until the baby is successfully treated or grows out of it. Colic is said to
stop naturally at twelve weeks of age, unfortunately research suggests up to
60% of colicky babies may carry on suffering after this.
When your baby cries it can be very stressful you as a parent. So what can you
do?
Cranial Osteopathy has a very good reputation for curing colic in babies. It
works by releasing the tension or compression that has accumulated in the baby’s body during pregnancy or birth, which can be acting as an underlying cause of
colic.
Are there any causes of colic that are not related to birth and pregnancy?
Yes, it appears that Dairy Intolerance and an immature gut, can also cause
colic. See the section on Dairy intolerance and on Crying Babies for each of
these.
Are there any reasons other than colic that might make a baby cry excessively?
Yes, see the section on Crying Babies and Reflux for more information.
