Children and adults with recurrent ear, nose, throat or sinus problems appear to
suffer from one or both of the following: poor drainage of the ear, nose,
throat and sinus areas and / or intolerance to dairy foods. Poor drainage is usually associated with a poor flexibility in the skull and can
be treated very successfully with Cranial Osteopathy.
Chronic sinus problems respond very well to treatment to the bones of the face
where past sinus infections, injuries, dental infections or dental treatment
may have caused inflexibility of the minute joints between the many facial
bones.
Children with “glue ear” (presence of mucus in the middle ear cavity - where only air should be – that usually causes temporary deafness and discomfort) usually respond to
Cranial treatment extremely well. In some cases symptoms and family history suggest that a dairy intolerance is
present as well as inflexibility in the skull and so a dairy-free diet is also
necessary for permanent relief.
The classic glue ear sufferer begins with ear infections in the first year and
goes on to be noticeably hard of hearing in the second year, carrying on with
intermittent deafness, earache and sore throats until 6 or 7 when most children
grow out of it. During this time they may lose their appetite for long periods
of time, their ear drums may become permanently scarred and their learning may
suffer due to deafness. So even though most children grow out of it, it is an
unpleasant condition with potential long term consequences and should be
treated. Conventional treatments include grommets with of without adenoid
removal. Under a general anaesthetic a tiny tube or grommet is placed in each ear drum. This allows mucus to drain out of the ears for as long as the grommet remains in
place. In many cases the glue ear returns when the grommets fall out. Cranial
Osteopathy for glue ear means your child avoids a general anaesthetic, recovers
from the glue ear and has the added benefits that cranial osteopathic treatment
offers to their general wellbeing.
